First and foremost option is to apply for Combined Defence Services Examination conducted by UPSC. Candidates need to qualify in CDSE exam and then they need to be recommended by Services Selection Board in SSB interviews. Once recommended by the board, candidate will be admitted into IMA or OTA according to the course opted and vacancies available.

Second way of becoming an officer in Indian Army is through Non Tech entry. Indian Army releases Non Tech course notifications occasionally to recruit eligible candidates for administrative officer posts. Indian Army will shortlist the candidates for SSB interviews and from the interviews same procedure will follow.

Non Tech entry officers will be commissioned as Short Service Commissioned officers in Indian Army and will be trained at Officers Training Academy.
