Equipment to sanitise public spaces developed by DRDO | Big breakthrough in disinfecting COVID-19

Written by Neha Dubey on Apr 05, 2020

Specialised equipment to sanitise public spaces such as malls, hospitals, roads, offices has been developed by DRDO. Read on to know about DRDO's special equipment to sanitize public spaces to disinfect COVID-19 Coronavirus.

Indigenous COVID-19 disinfecting equipment developed by DRDO

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is one of the most efficient and technologically topmost organisations of Indian Armed Forces which keeps on innovating specialised equipment and medicines to help Indian Armed Forces personnel.

After the Indian Armed Forces swung into action in fighting against COVID-19 epidemic, DRDO has also started to develop innovative equipment that will be very effective in fighting against Coronavirus in India.

As COVID-19 virus is spreading all across the country, there needs to be specialized equipment for sanitising the infected area where an infected person had roamed so as to contain the spread of this epidemic. If you had ever seen viral videos of China where heavy machines are deployed to sanitize roads, you might have wondered whether India could ever develop such massive COVID-19 sanitization machinery. However, DRDO's Centre for Fire Explosive & Environment Safety (CFEES) department has developed indigenous sanitising equipment to combat the COVID-19 Corona virus.

The newly developed public spaces sanitising equipment comes in the following two configurations to cater to varying requirements in terms of size and accessibility of public spaces:-

Portable Backpack Area Sanitisation Equipment

Portable Backpack Area Sanitisation equipment which has been developed by the CFEES, Delhi is portable and easily carryable equipment for sanitising area up to 300 square metres. The portable backpack area sanitising equipment will house decontamination solution made up of liquid with one per cent Hypochlorite (HYPO) solution. This equipment will also have a spraying jet through which the sanitising operator/worker will be able to spray the solution in the suspected area of COVID-19 contamination.

The Portable Backpack Area Sanitisation Equipment will have a low-pressure twin fluid technology through which the equipment will be able to generate very fine mist. The operator carrying the backpack will spray the solution on the affected areas to disinfect the surfaces suspected for contamination. This portable equipment is helpful to disinfect areas such as hospital reception, corridors, doctor chambers, offices, pathways, bus stations, metro stations and houses if required.

Trolley Mounted Large Area Sanitisation Equipment

Trolley Mounted Large Area Sanitisation Equipment is a higher capacity sanitisation equipment that would be very handy to disinfect larger areas in a short time. Trolley Mounted Large Area Sanitisation Equipment has been built upon low-pressure single fluid technology to generate fine mist and the fluid will be a disinfectant fluid.

This trolley mounted equipment will be able to sanitize areas up to 3000 square metres as the equipment's tank capacity is 50 litres and also it can spray at a distance of 12-15 metres. Large areas such as hospitals, malls, airports, metro stations, isolation areas, quarantine centres and high-risk residential areas would be effectively disinfected with this Trolley Mounted Large Area Sanitisation Equipment.

Both of these two sanitising equipment have been put in use by Delhi police and DRDO is in the process of supplying the equipment to other agencies of India.
